Little “J” found butterflies and caterpillars at the weekend and his mum sent over a message and some photos to add to the “Bring and share” board. I planned for us to use the “Very hungry caterpillar” felt board and book and also the plastic life cycle models to extend his learning and develop on his interest.
As an additional bonus, we were lucky to be visited by a very small hoppy bug and we caught it in a jar so that we could get a better look at it.

Everyone was so gentle with the bug and very keen to look at it.

We went to the bookshelf and found our bug identification book. We could not find anything that matched but decided it was some type of Grasshopper!

We then decided to check on google images to see if we could find anything that matched better.

We decided that a Pygmy Grasshopper was the closest match and read that they like to live near ponds. The children took the jar outside and  let the bug go near our little nature pond.

We stayed and watched the Grasshopper until he hopped away!
