Today we had a lovely time at the play center for children with additional needs. It is one of our favorite places to visit and we always spend at least one day a week there in the summer holidays.
Today was Lego themed activities and one activity was to make surfboards for our little Lego men.
This was a great opportunity to encourage exploration and conversation about sinking and floating.

After using permanent pens to decorate pieces of flat polystyrene, we placed our figures on them and watched them float. We looked at different materials and tested them to see if they worked in the same way. We made predictions before each one to see what we thought would happen and then added it to the water. Sometimes we predicted something would sink, like paper, but it would float until the Lego man was added! This gave rise to some real thinking about why this might have happened.

  • Place objects and a bowl of water out along with a sheet of paper devided in to two columns. Floats and sinks. Encourage the children to explore this activity at their leisure and to find items of their own to try. Encourage prediction making and explaining their reasons for their prediction.
