Autumn is starting to show!

I love this time of year! So much to see and changes happening daily! It’s a great time to teach children about changes in our seasons, slowing down and hibernating, harvest and the death and decaying of our plants each tear ready to grow again in the spring!

We checked on the local Horse chestnut a couple of weeks ago to see if the conkers were ready. A few had fallen but most were not quite ready.

The children used descriptive words to describe how the cases felt. Hard, spiky, prickly, round.

We tried to brake a few open but without much success as they were not quite ready. We did a find a few though with lovely brown shiny treasures inside!

Extend learning: come back in a couple of weeks and look at the changes. Are more falling from the trees? Are they opening now? How have the leaves changed? Are there more leaves on the floor now?

Today’s play meets the following EYFS areas:

  1. Physical development
  2. Communication and language
  3. Understand the world
